Ben Carrigan - Hey Carrie Anne

Upon hearing this song, something immediately made me think of Tears For Fears, particularly their track ‘I Believe’.

The orchestral finish was a blast, and a challenge, to mix.

Kat Wright - Contact

This awesome track by Kat Wright was recorded live by Telefunken.

The live nature led to lots of mic bleed that had to be leaned into rather than sliced and diced. Brass tone inspired by Reel Big Fish!

The Blues Bastards - Lights Out

With 47 different tracks to work with, including an abundance of guitar, a beefy drum track, and dynamic vocals, this song from The Blues Bastards was great fun to mix.

Some mix decisions were made that felt risky but worked in practice, such as an 80s style gated snare sound being juxtaposed with a more modern, thick drum sound and 90s grunge style of vocal.

Leaf - Come Around

This multitrack of ‘Come Around’ by Belgian group ‘Leaf’ dates from 2007. Challenges included some runaway frequencies on vocal layers, an abundance of guitar tracks and a bounced drum track with enthusiastic tambourine glued right in.

Some creative liberties were taken with the arrangement to help with dynamics. particularly the moving and layering of vocal takes, and the addition of a thickening snare sample.

The Right Words

Something New (2019)

Music, Lyrics, and Arrangements by Damian Morris

Recorded in the now-defunct Cream Studios in Western Sydney, the goal of this EP was to combine the influence of Prog Rock, Punk, Post-Punk, and New Wave to create Something New.

From the Cure-inspired Synth and Bass VI of Ambition, Ramones & Blink-182 influence in Good Enough, and the 3/4 swing of “Wait Hey”, compositional choices fuelled an aspiration to approach each mix in its own unique way.

Dylan Wright

This performance of Broken Paradise was recorded as part of a video shoot at the Artist Centre, utilising a dynamic microphone for vocals, and a three-mic set up on the guitar (2 pencil mics in x-y configuration plus a large diaphragm condenser for ambience)

To make the most of being recorded in an untreated space, the sympathetic resonance from hanging guitars was blended into the final mix in place of a reverb effect.

Voli K

This performance of Sweet Darlin’ by Fiji was recorded live at The Artist Centre

Vocal chain includes Soundtoys Sie-Q for natural sounding saturation, and TDR Nova to De-Ess.

The finishing touches included Izotope Neutrino to help certain elements find their own sonic space, then another instance of Sie-Q on the master bus helped to glue it all together.
